The other countries in North America: “we are a government looking after our citizens.”
The United States:
We are a government being cruel to the people our voters want us to be cruel to.
What an absolute embarrassment. Instead of electing leadership to help us become safer, healthier, and even wealthier; we elected the opposite. And the people who support him will say all of this is a good thing- BECAUSE THEY ARE IN A CULT. up is down
Only Ivanka got 30 dolls. Tell us you don't know how Americans live in one post. A lot of folks are more than happy to have one doll to give their child.... And now they have to pay more.
Are you agreeing with me and talking along, by which fine, sorry misread you. Or are you disagreeing? Because that isn't totally clear from your reaction. (Which could be read like you didn't get what I mean with the 'let them eat cake' bit).
I feel like a lot of people are missing that. The reaction seems to be that Americans are massive consumers and will be offended by this because we will take this remark as an attack on our freedom. I think most normal folks see it and think “I’m worried about food and he’s talking about dolls.”
Yeah and the whole let them eat cake thing was a story made up by Robespierre iirc. Who put the French monarchy and himself on a radical weightloss diet.
Sure we import something like 80% of toys from China, but we also import tens of billions worth of medical equipment and grain and fruits and pharmaceuticals and machinery and meat and so on and so on.
But I guess that, "So you'll have two of your prescriptions instead of all of them and they'll cost more" is an even harder sell (except to RFK, Jr) than talking about dolls.
& there's also the matter that China is a big consumer of American agricultural products. What happens when they turn elsewhere?
I've been hearing the (sinophobic?) chestnut about China becoming the next hegemon all my life & like it wasn't gonna happen unless something took out the USA.
The idea that people can economize by buying their children fewer dolls is on a par with telling millennials they could afford homes if they bought less avocado toast.
The people who will feel the pain most intensely are not buying dozens of dolls for their kids.
The context behind the 2 dolls business is that the toy shelves will be empty at Christmas due to tariffs on China…choice of dolls to buy will be 2, not 30.
So many people get so mad that kids might be allowed to eat without paying. I can't imagine the level of vitriol if we started allowing them to see without paying, too.
*Pedantry - Mark Carney is our Head of Government, and the Head of State is King Charles, represented by the Governor General. This is actually extra-relevant today because it’s just been announced that KC will be opening the next session of Parliament. Typically the GG gives the opening speech.
Is your correction actually correct? I thought the King of Canada is always the head of state, even if represented by the Governor General. Anyway, good Rabbi could correct it by saying 'three heads of government'.
The British monarch has always been Canada's head of state, though they have no political power in Canada, it's a figurehead role, and are represented here by our Governor-General.
Canada's head of government is the Prime Minister.
So HM King Charles is head of state, PM Carney is head of govt.
Who got 30 dolls for Christmas? Certainly not THIS gen-x kid. He must have been thinking of Ivanka’s Christmas. Not Tiffany tho, she probably did get 2 dolls.
I want to rage, and I will. But something also tells me that I shouldn't be surprised that the richest and most privileged and most powerful nation would regress to this. A regression to the mean, based on problems of inequality that have been deferred, but still have not been solved.
Its fine Prime Ministers are more or less treated as that even if they aren't that in practice (they can be booted out of their position within their party at any time).
What's the distinction in Canada, out of curiosity? Trying to learn more about Canadian politics as I, you know, might be Moving Northward depending on how things go down here.
Canada is a Constitutional Monarchy, and so the Monarch of England is the head of state, and the Governor General of Canada is the Monarch’s representative in Canada (and lives here). The Prime Minister is the Head of Government.

Tell them this:
1. Call for impeachment. Loudly. Daily.
2. Go see your constituents in the concentration camps in El Salvador.
Or don’t ask for money…

I do agree that Trump is disgusting and anti-person, though. Anti-growth, anti-human being.
Less immigrants
Less allies
Less products
Less trade
Less government services
Less freedoms
Just burning progress to satisfy a fantasy
only difference is that he's balding more and the combover doesnt have much left to cover
