Everyone keeps calling this a second guilded age, but during the first guilded age the rich people donated half of their wealth to charity and built universities and research hospitals and libraries. Today they just hide their money offshore and cry about taxes.
Philanthropy used to be the obscenely wealthy's stamp of legacy. To show the world that THEY mattered. Now the conceit has become more insular, helping few but themselves
