Henry Ossian Flipper (1856-1940) was a former slave, soldier, engineer, first African-American to graduate from West Point Military Academy, as well as the first Black commissioned officer in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant under Capt. Nicolas Nolan's 10th Calvary.
