I've long pondered on Miyazaki's 2cv, as in the 1960s any foreign car would have had an element of snob appeal. Interestingly, a 2cv on a junkyard is the home of a homeless man and child in Kurosawa's Dodes'ka-dan. The native Toyota Publica was inspired by the 2cv... but it did not suit Miyazaki.

Yes we got the Publica in Canada, but it was not a 2CV.

As it goes... Toyota tested the 2cv, and even built a front wheel drive Publica prototype, but considered the CV joints too troublesome. So the publica got a 2cv inspired flat twin, but RWD.

Well yes, and having driven a few early 2CVs with the U-joints (pre-CV) Toyota was probably right. For me, the French-inspired Japanese car that's a bit of a white whale is the Hino Contessa, and specifically the Samurai (speaking of Kurosawa, he was the team captain figurehead).
