Multiple conversations with friends with kids who I asked about coping with this situation in our country said something like ordinary lives still happens in WWII, et al. A friend’s grandmother in Estonia was married 1944 with blacked out windows. she died being irritated by her wedding photos

There is a reason why people in conflict zones start having more kids than fewer, just as a plant will try to flower when under duress, the most intrinsic instinct & makes sense: you want hope for future, you want to ensure survival some way against all odds. I don't get ppl don't get it.

My dad was why my grandmother from Manchester, England ended upon RMS Queen Mary on her way to NY in early 1946. Lots of good happens at even the worse of times.

I wish so much that I could ask my grandparents for more details about how they got through the early 20th century, especially the 1918 flu and the Dust Bowl/Great Depression and the World Wars. I wish I had known the right questions to ask when they were still alive.

I know that my maternal grandpa was watching Lawrence Welk before he was famous live in the Dakotas. I have snapshots of his sister having a silly mock wedding. It wasn’t all drinking and cards.

Yes, they had a lot of in-person live entertainment, either to watch or to participate in. Sometimes. But card games were zero-cost social events, and serving inexpensive drinks at home was a lot cheaper than going out.

My family did not have a lot of live entertainment available, given that one side was a bit downstream from Standing Rock and the other side was in rural central Texas. Of course they played cards and drank cheap liquor at home. I wish I knew more about the experiences & feelings particular to them.

I'm giggling at the thought of my grandfather discussing his feelings. My grandmother did so exactly once that I recall, when she talked about how horrified she was when her father bought a farm because she didn't want to move so far out of town.
