Nothing wrong with ranking other folks. But the final round is going to be either Mamdani or Lander against Cuomo, so as long as you rank the first two and don't rank the third, you're golden.

My understanding though--and this comes from the PSC among other sources--is that voters should rank 5, not less than 5. The more people you rank who are not Andrew Cuomo, the better. It's of less importance than the stuff you said, but still matters--use every vote!

Ranking five was excellent advice early, when it wasn't clear how the race was going to shake out. But at this point the only way it can effect the outcome—assuming you vote for Mamdani and Lander—is if somehow BOTH of them finish behind some other non-Cuomo candidate.

And that's not gonna happen.

You're right, and really this isn't a huge thing, but the fact is there are people out there who will vote for, say, three people, and one of them won't be Mamdani or one of them won't be Lander, and that would be a mistake. Fill the ballot, not Cuomo, both Mamdani and Lander should get a vote.

My thinking here is that it should be simple and work for any contingency. If you love Amos, great, put her first, but use the other four spots, and rank Mamdani and Lander. I imagine there are plenty of people who would *not* to do the latter and we don't want anything like what happened last time.

No reason not to vote for five, but the chances that anyone other than Mamdani, Lander, and Cuomo make it to the final round are essentially zero. Given that, if you rank both Mamdani and Lander, you're guaranteed to have a final-round candidate in the mix against Andrew.

Just one more thing: I say you should rank both Mamdani and Lander above. It's overwhelmingly likely that Mamdani or Cuomo is going to win this primary, but if it's somehow neither one of them, the only possible other person it could be is Lander. So there's no reason not to cover all your bases.

also I am genuinely wondering what the effect of yesterday's events will have on the race. I think this primary is shaping up to be pretty high turnout (for a NYC mayoral primary) and if anything, Lander may get more folks to turn out/vote for him at or near the top.

Cuomo will almost certainly be in the final round of the tallying, so the thing you need to do to help beat him is to be sure you DON'T rank him and DO rank anyone who could possibly be in that final round against him.

And as of now that's pretty clearly Mamdani and Lander.
