Normally I'm skeptical of gatekeeping. I was treated badly by a FB group of rock/metal (which was a reggaeton-hate group) for liking Japanese rock and being a "freak", and also so many anime fan men becoming fascists and treating minorities like "hobby ruiners" hurt me hard.

It is a good point. I admit the cultural elitists and so on deserve karma for ruining it for minorities and being so "we accept you until you are way too different/weird to us". But it is complicated when gatekeeping has been a fascist weapon in a context of capitalist cooptation of hobbies.
