After a point, I've put my sketch layer on lower opacity. It often helps me sooner notice if I'm on the wrong layer.

I got into the habit of fading my sketch to like 60% so if I draw a line and it looks weird I'll know

I also forget. Though what helps me is I always set the layer property colour to blue. So if suddenly my ink lines are blue I know I'm on the wrong later.
