According to the Canadian government website: Calixa Lavallée,... was asked to compose the music for a poem written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier. As intended, the first performance of “O Canada” took place on June 24, 1880, at a banquet held at the Pavillon des Patineurs in the City of Québec.

Yes, that would be the original French version of the song. An English version did not exist for quite some years after. But while the song started becoming popular, the Royal Anthem was the official national anthem until 1967.

The English version was never a translation of the French version. But the French version dates back to 1880 and hence is significantly older than any English version, including the "original" English one.
