personally i just use a spiral generator (like http://hypno.zyntaks.ca) when i need a spiral background. for most basic ones it works fine enough!

I make many *almost* concentric circles with the circle tool. Most of the time there's enough stuff in the foreground that it can pass for a spiral.
I only do it by hand if it's small and/or very noticeable.
