I don't know what century you think it is in Japan but I bet lots of married couples there actually like each other and are happy in each other's company.

There are many happy couples in Japan & some do have children. This year on a Sunday I saw them (M/F couples) strolling the Yokohama water front with cute little dogs in strollers. It doesn't take much for women to decide to have fewer or no children.
In 2008 Japan brought in a law that states if a woman divorces a husband (after his retirement, I assume) she gets half his pension. It’s designed to hopefully force husbands to be better family members & thus make their wives happier.
Just trying to lighten the thick atmosphere of "Japan, where everyone is unhappy and alienated" here. I don't doubt it's not all great sushi and roses there.
