No-one gets that kind of cultural ubiquity so quickly now - but the list still aims to highlight artists on the verge of wider mainstream success.
What’s changed isn’t the speed of exposure, it’s that the industry & BBC have less control or foresight over who it happens to.
That said, music is so fragmented now that she’s still new/undiscovered to many people. If the list’s job is to aid discovery, she (just) deserves a place.
Timing is always difficult. Arguably, previous nominees weren’t ready. This year, the pendulum swung the other way. But it’s all good music. 🤷♂️
I used to enjoy being one of the ‘judges’ on this.
Also striking how many already massive acts are on it this year.
My mum, a huge pop fan who listens to music constantly, couldn't pick Ezra Collective (or even Chappell Roan) out of a line-up right now. But give it a year and maybe?
Arguably it has over-corrected this year, but there are plenty of unknowns on there too.
I appreciate you won’t say “Yeah, it’s a mess,” but when MVT is nearing the ticket levy to help grassroots venues, this implies R1 dismisses those artists. I know it does care, but imo the messaging is so disappointing.
I get the albatross point, but there’s a separate debate on the industry pressuring tastemakers - who should see through the hype if an artist isn’t ready (FLO.)
Again, I get the problem isn’t on you.
Yup, that's 11 artists. There was a tie for 10th place.
The top 5 will be announced 6-10 January 2025.
And yes, some artists have bigger profiles than before. The rules were tweaked to reflect the difficulty of achieving crossover success in the streaming era.
Arguably, previous years have pushed artists into the spotlight before they were ready - eg Flo’s debut album came out last week, 2 years after they won.
There’s a risk that of the prize becoming an albatross if it’s too early.
Chappell Roan? Give me a break
