She will get out being an English citizen. If she came from south of the border they would have deported her already. Keep posting, keep the pressure on.

BBC adds helpful context: it seems she did household chores in exchange for accommodation in the US and the Canadian authorities interpreted that (and her intention to do similar in Canada) as working illegally on a tourist visa. Pretty innocent mistake frankly but we're now in a zero tolerance era.

Don’t blame you at all. I’ve been here 30 years and seriously contemplating moving back to UK. But California will resist and my family has been insulated here so far, so I’d prefer not to upend my daughter’s education unless life here becomes untenable.
