The craziest thing is that you were ACTUALLY right!
Back in the 1880s the term dude popped up as another word for dandy. Cowboys picked it up too as fancy city slickers that would visit.
Thus they created guest ranches for these dudes that would visit to get a taste of the cowboy life. A dude ranch!
