This wishful thinking is not backed up by reality. Vance and Trump are now openly attacking Zelensky, saying he started the war and has no backing by his people. They are openly hostile to Ukraine

US rhetoric has hardened further in last 24 hours I agree. But I still think we keep more options open by not flouncing out of NATO (while preparing for the possibility) than we do by the knee jerk reaction.

Well, I’m not sure it would make sense to trust US guarantees even if they were to magically urn 180 degrees. But as long as we act as if NATO is dead, I agree, there’s no rush officially killing it. But we can’t do things like sharing sensitive intel with the US etc, which is crazy.

Hard to see how the US raising doubts over the strength of its commitment to Europe can lead to a strengthened NATO. It’s damaging, and dangerous too, because it may lead Putin to miscalculate what he can get away with.

I hope you’re right, but Trump is who he is he’s been chasing deals with Putin for decades and nothing has changed his mind. Europe needs to be preparing for a post NATO world.

There is no need for a massive public row with the Americans. The Europeans, including UK, just need to get on with investing in all kinds of defence capability. Capability they can use together, and without the Americans, if the need arises. And do it as quickly as possible.

I think the breaking point is if the US genuinely tries to impose a settlement on Ukraine. Europe collectively can’t tolerate a new Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
