It started decades ago in my hometown (Portland, OR). As people got priced out of California, they moved to Portland and bought up significant amounts of housing and priced people out, often onto the streets. Sound familiar?

Wow. Since people liked this take so much, here’s another one: criminalizing homelessness will only lead to further economic instability and increased crime rates. Crime goes down when people’s basic needs (yes, that includes housing) are met. However… 🧵

People (esp politicians and media) stick to the same stories about crime and the “need for more police” (*cough* Cleveland). Worse, it’s actually more expensive to surveil a community than to house and feed one. And yet, politicians and corporations lobby for more police, and less housing 🤗
