Literally! When reading it I loved Alice and Jasper, and then when I watched I was like *HELLO, ALICE [AND JASPER]!~* Tbh, I was basically Team Anyone-But-Edward for the entirety of them, but I knew it would sadly be Edward. Even as a youngling, I knew their relationship was actually pretty awful.
Though it doesn't *EXCUSE* what he did during the Confederacy, it does sound a lot like he had a lot of growth. I don't have enough space to explain on here though.
But I guess, at least in my headcanon, I like to believe that he grew for the better. ^^;
Also, reading his backstory, a lot of his views and such changed over the years. Being alive for 200 or so years gives a lot of chance for growth. I'd like to think that, based on how he was written, that there was a good chance he no longer aligned with them - if he ever truly did.
To be quite fair, in the 1800's when that happened, in his region, there was a lot of misinformation and pressure. Also... a lot of people were shot for denying to join. Propaganda at the time kinda chalked it up to patriotism of the South. Many also enlisted to escape their home lives.
