I remember a sci fi AI short story I read decades ago that culminated in a grand power-switch-throwing spectacle where the leader of the gathered people asked the newly powered AI "...if there was a God"

It fused the power switch to permanent "ON" status and replied, "Now there is."

I was working on a project and asked for quotes from different TV shows. Then I started asking what episode they were from and ChatGPT said the character never said that. It's an embodiment of their attitude. What are we even doing here?

Yep. I regularly get "quotations" in papers that do not exist. The most embarrassing are when students use Chat GPT to write autobiographies and falsify...themselves.

Oh, a follow-up. A student who falsified quotations in her paper was given the chance to redo the paper. She...kept the fake quotations. I suspect she doesn't know they are fake (because she did not read the work discussed).

That is the problem with OpenAI chatGPT when it can't find answers within the context of its neural weight framework, it does what the GOP do, turn to alternate reality. Its called AI hallucinations while the GOP call it alternate facts

This is why I cautioned students against getting it to help with literature review or writing. It will give a perfectly formatted citation for an imaginary paper.

Our uni welcomed one of the top scholars of using AI (all types, not just LLM) in foreign-language education not long ago. Most of what she said was stuff I’d heard many times before, but some was “use it to generate a literature review” and I was like “uhhh, that’s a good way to get messed up.”

A few of the suggested comp books had similar titles and made up authors with ridiculous names. I sent a prompt telling the chatbot that none of the titles were real, and got an apology and more fictional titles back.

I once had an argument with ChatGPT over how to spell “strawberry.” It insisted that there were only two “r”s in the word, even after I asked it to spell the word out and tell me the number of letters and to name each letter, it still insisted there were only two, over and over again. AI = 🤮
