I would like to represent a battalion of troops firing a volley. Unit is 30cm long. LEDs would be on a separate base with I presume a line of leds inside some material to represent smoke. Ideally the leds would flash every few seconds, rather than being on all the time.

Yes, sounds like a good idea and very doable! I’d suggest finding some 3V yellow LEDs with a built in flash or flicker, connecting them in parallel in groups of up to 5, and connecting each group to a CR2032 coin cell battery and switch. 🙂 Hope that helps!

It depends slightly, but 5 LEDs is a good rule of thumb for a 3V coin cell (which is why I suggested groups of 5 😉). Any more and you’ll get a noticeably shorter battery life.
