That is some bendy occlusion. And that ‘sack’ of low pressure looks good too. If you’d be interested, you can type into Google ‘ecmwf geographical coverage’ to see the state of the world in terms of who sends what and what enters the model. Not only SYNOPs and METARs, but a load of other stuff.

At 06 UTC this morning, a main synoptic hour, there were over 10,000 land SYNOPs & close to 1000 ships & buoys.
I have cut down the hourly SYNOPs that I archive these days to Europe to save disk space.
I think they hide the ships.
You are probably right about the SHIPs, but then I think you can find a fair amount of ship trackers online for free. Don’t know what’s going on. Ogimet is a great resource. I’ve tried contacting the owner through the years, but it’s as if the email doesn’t work.
