I understand about 400k 🇨🇦 people rely on Starlink (rural folks as well as remote gov’t services).
An alternative would have to be in place for those without a choice before banning a service. 1/3
In 2022, Xplornet (🇨🇦) was sold to a US private equity co. It is now Xplore and is the only rural satellite internet competitor to Starlink in my rural BC area. Starlink took away over half of the local customers. 2/3
It depends on needs and use. Most of my rural neighbours who switched to Starlink changed for better streaming. I think Xplore has caught up on that now. They have been a reliable provider for my household for years, but we aren’t heavy or full-time users. I’m happy I stuck with them.
Xplore has hung on, upped their game, added a new satellite. They provide excellent customer service. Starlink has no customer service. You get your stuff, set it up yourself and are on your own. Works great until it doesn’t. 3/3
Need an alternative. Rural Northerner. Hopefully, we will see Ford rip up the Starlink contract. And, maybe we can develop our own satellites that offer Canadians an alternative.
Done, even though it means going back to driving 20km to use the limited bandwidth computers in the village library.
Yes, I know about Xplore. My previous experience with them is, shall we say, less than stellar. I find it difficult to imagine that they will improve under private equity ownership.
