Keep an eye on state leges also. There's a bill proposed in Texas requiring everyone, including people registered for years, to prove citizenship. That will un-register a lot of people.

The loophole is your passport. If a woman got it or renewed it after getting married, it proves her citizenship and has the correct name. The SAVE ACT is definitely an attempt to keep women from voting. Not all of us have passports.

I’m worried about this. I got my passport before I divorced and changed my name back. Everything else is updated. I haven’t done the passport because it’s expensive and I haven’t needed it. Ugh.

If you changed back to your maiden name, you’ll match your birth certificate. The law they are trying to pass requires a birth certificate or passport to prove citizenship. You should be good to go.

There’s a twist, because of course there is. I was adopted when I was 4, and my name was changed to my step-father’s. I went back to my birth name. So unfortunately, they don’t match. Ugh.

I got married 40 years ago & I did not want to part with my surname so I made it my middle name. Perhaps it is time for all women to keep their birth name and for all of us to KILL the Mrs. prefix in our language. "My name is MINE to keep and it's no one's fuc***g business to know if I am married.

I never changed my name because my physician assistant license is under my maiden name. Didn't want patients to be able to find my kids who have my husband's last name. Never changing it now. My last name is unique and MINE. Plus I don't want to be associated with my in laws

I kept my last name when I got married, but have never known whether to choose Ms. or Mrs. (also just think it's weird that anyone needs to know if I'm married...). I'm finishing my PhD after 7 agonizing years, and it'll be totally worth it when I get to fill out forms and choose "Dr." instead.

Yep, this is a "live and learn" post. We need to take all the baby steps we can to eventually put down the patriarchal rule and suppression of woman so that laws like the SAVE act will not affect us. But, if baby steps do not work it might be time for harsher actions!!

Yup. I live in Metro Detroit, where Canada is just a 30 minute drive away and it's possible to miss a highway exit and get stuck headed for the border crossing.
Lots of people I know living in this area don't have passports.
I'm sure even more ppl who live further from a border don't have one.

The Act requires evidence of citizenship. My state will surely add photo ID. Today I learned that in order to obtain a passport/"Real ID" containing my BIRTH NAME, I must have a court order. That's because I changed my name at marriage and I did not divorce. HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN SCORNED!

It also discriminates against transgender voters.
