I don't know all of the ins and outs, but I think they use code generators to refactor matchable instances of deprecated code to the new version, plus I'm guessing some AI suggestions these days, and submit a PR with the changes. Not a complete or perfect solution all the time but nice to have.

Why's that?

It submits everything as a PR with individual commits for each change, so you can review it all just like you would if a dev went through and made the changes. It doesn't auto merge it or anything.

i guess in my mind the process of bumping and the design process of “does this bump offer us larger refactor opportunities” are the same thing. like i’d want more subjective control of the entire idea of the bump, not just “remove deprecated function call, replace”

Fair enough, that makes sense. When I've used them in the past, it was very helpful even if we didn't always merge the PR. Or if a project was several major versions behind.
