Always suspected HS2 would be paid for by everyone but too expensive to use for most.

The Conservative government prioritised privatisation but just let railways get on with it with insufficient regulations in place and too little public funding. This expensive and inefficient railway system is what we're left with.

Hope your journey goes well! Public transport is how I get around as I don’t drive and with family all over the country it is a constant source of stress during what should be excited anticipation! Once took me 15 hrs to get from Glasgow to my home in Kent, don’t even ask 🙄

I hope you got there ok. My last train Inverness to Edinburgh had no heating but blasting freezing air, no working toilet and was so filthy you couldn’t see out window. This is why we still drive.

Train fares from Newcastle to London are prohibitively expensive for me, a decade ago there were fabulous deals around but now as a under 60 single traveller seems I'm the only demographic not able to purchase a Railcard, hopefully better prices aren't too far ahead 🙏

120 on the train from Bath to Bradford when I needed to go a few weeks ago. Only 25 in petrol in my motorised roller skate. Didn't have an option, couldn't spare 120 quid.
I made a journey of similar length in Austria a couple of years ago, the train was 10euros, comfortable and clean.

It is far too expensive, plus the lack of carriages at times can make for cramped, unpleasant conditions. I am healthy enough though getting to an age where i don’t want to risk standing for hours. I rarely take train journeys beyond London now - an hour away.

Leading by example ❤️ Sadly though, for many people, they would choose plane over train as it’s cheaper to fly than it is to get the train. Traversing the UK via train is very expensive, and many can’t afford it.

I’m OK with the time it takes (in Highlands to everywhere is a long way!) - can work/read/ relax on a train, but it really has to be cheaper than flying or driving and it never is.

We used to be able to reach Glasgow from Birmingham relatively cheaply in the Virgin days without changing. It now takes longer with a change and costs so much it's a lot cheaper by car (diesel). We would prefer to go by train but can no longer afford to.
