I had a penguin bite me when I was 8 at Edinburgh zoo.

As for zoos it may actually be early enough the penguins weren’t in it. There is that children’s book “Mr popper’s penguins” where the novelty of the birds is enough for a vaudeville act

Oh I fully suspect Lovecraft never saw a penguin. Honestly I'd not be surprised if he only ever read descriptions and never even saw a picture..

Every trip I've ever made to the zoo in my entire life, the penguin exhibit has been closed. To the point that I had started doubting our zoo actually had penguins. Maybe someday the stars will align, and I'll get the see one up close.
