Tech bros have no concept of enjoyment. They think people read comics just to read them in order to tick off a box and meet reading quotas (or whatever). They can’t understand that people LIKE the creative human element of it all.

It feels, to me, like the western comic industry fell into similar trappings as the game industry where they pursued increasingly higher production quality and coloring on the comics to try to outcompete each other rather than focusing on what drove people to the comics in the first place.

I read both types, but these days primarily read Manga/Manhwa/Manga since there are decent apps on the phone for high quality art and translations. I don't see why most Western comics couldn't be adjusted to fit a similar format. Webtoons has released some Western published comics in the same format

and those comics seem to be doing very well. They have also driven interest from reading these comics in that format to checking out further graphic novels on those same characters.

Also it's ironic that they mention that they can't wait 6 months for a new comic book to be illustrated but that is roughly how long it takes for a new volume of manga to come out.

This is just capitalism trying to fix a problem they created (endless growth) by selling a product we don't need.

But that’s the thing, right? Proponents of using “AI Art” don’t get that we make it to share it with others, to form connections as an inbuilt part of our species. They think it’s just a product that can be hyped to be sold. They don’t think about this at all because of the violence of capitalism.

The most damning criticism I ever gave was "This looks like a Kindergartener drew it. The characters are merged together and it is difficult to tell where the characters end and the background begins." I used to love that story, but they changed Artists for season 2 after a long hiatus.

I think it’s also unfair to compare American comics to manga on the business level. The way they publish and, I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure their number of artists is higher. Also, many aren’t colored pages.
