You don’t “come out” as a furry.
Adding to this over here too because I’m tired of seeing ppl correlating furry w/ being something to be ashamed of. You’re doing a disservice to yourself & other people, making it into something it’s not.
Furry is a hobby. No one comes out as “goth” for example.

Of course I don’t think being queer is something to be ashamed off.
*mom breaks out into sobbing.
Lest we forget parents used to think video games caused school shootings! (I’m sure some still do!)
I had to tell my parents that I play video games and one of those games was cod
they thought I was going to be the next school shooter.
Didn’t really even know about the nsfw aspect of this till I was older I just liked drawing cute cartoon animals. It is insane it’s a hobby not a way of life.
I get that it’s really this huge thing for some people and I respect that, but that doesn’t change the fact that it IS a hobby, because the vast majority are casuals.
Btw good luck! 💛
Even if you go into it heavily doesn’t change the fact it’s still just a hobby.
Yeah me neither! I was drawing anthro characters since I was single digits, before I even knew what furry was.
Its not exclusively but its absolutely the most outsized queer community out there and inherently tied to queerness.
I take it you're cishet?
That would influence your perspective on all of this.
Not trying to criticize but it's something you should consider.
It means a lot of us had to hide this part of ourself from people we didnt want knowing we were queer/trans.
Identity and expression of self are vulnerabilities. Parts of ourselves that the fascists want to stamp out.
You dont have those ties so it wasnt a barrier for you to get past.
Welcome to being part of a queer community even if you yourself arent.
Especially in countries like the US and UK where trans identity itself is in the process of being genocided.
Kids who were in to anime used to get dragged too. Now it’s the coolest thing.
I wore a fursuit partial I made to school for halloween, & most ppl thought it was cool af. I got bullied a lot in school, but more so for other things, like being emo LOL
For some it's just a hobby, for others, it's core enough to their sense of identity that having your friends or family reject it would be like them rejecting who you are.
I can turn being goth/a furry/a game player/a weeaboo off when appropriate and nobody would know unless I mentioned it or gave an outward sign, but being trans can't be separated from my daily life
Identity is complicated. What parts you choose and what you don't is a complex line to figure out, one that varies from person to person.
