With all that is going on with social media platforms, I can't help but think what a waste it was to invest in creating trainings for workers on how to use Twitter/Facebook/etc. We should just have reflected together on how to do digital communications in a different way & not really on these tools - ThreadSky

Every street vendor in Makola market Accra seems to be using Insta/FB/X/TT as their branding. I wonder if there is an inherent usefulness in the exercise in coming up with your business's voice that way, even though the platforms come and go. Wix isn't affordable to most small businesses in Africa.

I hadn't heard about ghost, I'll check it out!🙏It's true many vendors use SM for business, but the trainings we did were on using it for advocacy & organizing, thinking that SM could be a tool for workers' rights 🫠 maybe some still can, but we (our org) focused too much on it for this w/ few results

I got drawn in to the Occupy protests which was the early wave of attempts to use SM for oppositional politics... It didn't work but I wonder if that was due to the users more than the tools? Discourse then was dominated by annoyed in-debt graduates, saturated in Theory.

There could be an outcome in non-anglophone regions and Africa where the existing tools are repurposed in a way which is less toxic. I don't see how Meta/Musk/Alphabet could accrue much advantage or profit that way, though, so maybe not.

That's the thing, I also have the impression (maybe mistakenly) that SM during Occupy era was not as monetizable as today, I don't think activists needed to pay for ads to break thru the noise 🥲
