Kroger is allegedly overcharging consumers by listing expired sales prices on shelves and charging full price at checkout.
And thanks to decades of consolidation, Kroger stores are now the only grocers in some rural areas.
Minimal competition means maximized price gouging.

The cashiers are only pawns in this game. Do NOT hate them for being there; but don't use it as an excuse to let corporations skirt around the law.
But use their time. Have them do the work for you, because it's their job. Let the managers deal ->
If they won't cooperate... leave their cart there & shop elsewhere (or some other time)
What I'm worried about is empty shelves, though.
The store manager doesn’t bring out additional cashiers?
They direct us to self checkout?
We walk out
Full baskets of groceries .. frozen & perishables
Give us a 10% discount if they want us to be a cashier.
Now we know why he resigned.
It is the points which are added. If you are shorted, call the corporate office and tell them more you need and they will add them to your account. It can't be done locally.
Gotta be careful.
For example, Kroger "stale" bread has a 50% off tag.
You go to the counter and it's full price as if freshly baked.
I was fooled once, never since.
Put all questionable items at the end with a separation bar.
Then dispute (you'll win btw)
but, actually, last monday, the barcode reader recognized the 50% off (a first)
Still gotta be careful.
Also the shelves tags have an expiration date. It's a hassle to read but it's feasible.
I throw the "stale" bread in freezer, then defrost with a bit of water added, when needed.
And the "errors" are always in the same direction: higher prices.
High shrink will reduce the overall budget for raises at a location, but unless they can prove theft and decide to prosecute they can't dock pay, at least in my state.
Also, you can ask for an adjustment if you catch it... I went 2 days after once because I couldn't find an item when I got home, and they replaced it without question.
That said, grocery store consolidation does concern me.
It's so funny cuz im in the store thinking "we were just talking about this online."
Except that's not true b/c the sale is even listed in the sale paper and app.
It's like they are trained to deny the computer is ever wrong cuz that's where corporate rigs the price.
Literally just happened to me an hour ago at Giant.
Had to call a manager to confirm price check. They waste your time to hope you give up.
sometimes it's been multiple items.
gotta watch them fukkers with BOTH eyes . . .
Because we have consumer protection.
Tell me, what information does the grocer need, on top of my bank card infos?
Must be important for them to extract it in such a cunning way, don’t you think?
Price gouging in anticipation?
She would have made childcare, healthcare, & housing more affordable, & shore up Social Security, Medicare, & Medicaid. She would have made sure billionaires paid their fair share in taxes too.
It's no wonder she lost, and the DEMs keep losing, even though GOP fascism is rampant.
DEMs are the *other* fascism, less popular than the GOP one.
Vote Green Party
NONE are as evil as Lord Bezos' Whole fascist Foods.
It got so bad I was having panic attacks and crying every day & thinking about driving into a tree on my way there. 🙃
The American voters need to become much more sophisticated or end up in a slave state system, that they will not easily ever escape.
It’s not an exaggeration.
So please, stop siding with corporations trying to screw people over
Didn’t they recently merge with another chain?
Both are great shopping alternatives.
Shopped there while stationed in Germany.
You'll need your own shopping bags & a quarter for the cart.
They knew about the listeria outbreak in November, or October, and they still allowed to lettice on the shelves..
it wasn’t until a week later when the FDA came out and said they yank the lettuce by then my guinea pig dead.
Save yourself some money by taking advantage of their intentional theft. If there is a sign, they will honor the price. If enough of us do it, it stops being cost effective for them to behavior poorly.
Don’t help the store.
That’s why I read dates on every single perishable that has one.
Meijer is a culprit also.
It used to be that you paid the advertised price, even if that was lower than what the store meant to charge. I don't think it was actually a law, but everybody followed it. Now they don't, they argue with you. Or say they can't do anything
Up because of tariffs. They may come down after he finally reverses direction. Prices will never be where they were at January 20. This is an opportunity for every company to pad their margin. On the way up and the way down.
(At least that's what is at my Kroger)
Their digital coupons don't always work either.
I have noticed this when I shop there!
Take a photo of the posted price for everything you buy and insist on that price.
I am Canadian, living in BC.
We used to go to Washington all the time, and would always stop at Fred Meyer. Always thought they had the lowest prices.
Now I know!
Won't matter for a few years anyways, no chance I am going to the US anytime soon!
We always shopped at Fred Meyer,b3cause, like you say they have everything!
Had no idea there were cheaper options.
In plain sight I have complained about that to their management!
I mean we have have no Kroger
But 4 grocery stores in a town of 3400 people plus a wide diverse of other towns that shop in our community plus Standing Rock Reservation
So as far as pulling that deceptive would be considered a grounds for disgruntled people
Ralphs, Dillons, Smith's, King Soopers, Fry's, QFC, City Market, Owen's, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker's, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick 'n Save, Metro Market, and Mariano's
If they wanted help from the government to protect them from fraudulent corporations they should have voted differently.
FAFO
And in self ck the price per pound must be monitored
Their computer skills are sloppy and at Kroger, always to their benefit.
Walmart sometimes surprises you with a lower price at ck out

#Groceries
I just made that word up, y'know. 😉
Most of the time they will honor what is listed on the shelves except for alcohol by law.
But you do need to be aware they are slow to change shelf prices.
I’ve spoke with management several times. Nothing has changed.
Prove me wrong.
#resist #antifa #turnyourbacktotrump
I mean, granted, they admitted in court to inflating prices. But this one doesn’t seem to compare.
Many excellent podcasts @pitchforkeconomics.bsky.social
available on YouTube as well. They discuss totally different ways of organising democracies

You just have to pay attention & call them on it!
Ours was written a long time ago to protect consumers when stores occasionally made a good-faith mistake…
…but if bad-actors have started doing it on purpose…
…then I say shoppers should definitely be able to fine them directly that way!🤬
And then …

I get a free item at the grocery store every few weeks.
(Kroger employee)
Almost everyone has a smartphone and you can shop from it.
I make my list at home, based on the prices listed on the app. Then go to the store and buy those things. I've not had these pricing problems. I have had digital coupons not attach and every time I email kroger
You do have to check your receipts.
That would tip you off that the tag is expired.
Again, not making excuses for them. They need to do better.
I won’t do it again, that’s for sure.
They are insanely stupid.
🤔
There's a line waiting, no available floor staff to intervene, owner-managers are permanently off doing personal shit or whatever, like they own the place...because they DO own the place.
. We shop there for healthy organic foods.
