These groups often operate within a framework of Christianity, even if they aren't Christian themselves. Everything is the doing of god, good or bad. Anything and everything is god's will, and if a bad thing happens to you, god wanted it to because bad things happen to bad people.

So therefore, in this logic, if bad things happen to you, you are a bad person who deserves it, because god says so.

Fundamentally, they believe that bad things do not happen to good people. Only bad people suffer, and if you are struggling or have a bad life, it's because you deserve it.

THAT is how and why conservatives latch onto such policies so strongly that punish people and make life harder or impossible: If you were good, it would not affect you. It affects you, therefore you are a sinner.

They think, because they are well off and have good lives, they are blessed by god.

If you're poor? Sick? Discriminated against? If you struggle and can't get a leg up, -obviously- god wouldn't do that to a good person.

You deserved it, you will get no help.

It's the worship of punishment and suffering as the will of a higher being.
