I don’t see any appetite for the level of investment this would take. Not just in Canada, but many countries. No political leader is talking about it.

I can’t think of such a major mobilization of investment and effort since… I’m not sure when.

Agree, and to add to the quote: “This country needs to build funding around excellence,” this must include our own scientists who have struggled because of large cuts to university funding (provincial cuts I believe). Many of our PhDs walk away from research- there are no jobs.
