Format was the root of a lot of issues.
They couldn't pick a genre lane: is it a slice of life/occasional adventure like MLP? Is a Star Wars style space opera, is it a morality dive on the nature of family?
Combine that with the show locking itself to Steven's POV and you've got a mess on your hand.

The big issue I heard was with the diamonds being evil dictators on a galactic scale who get hugged intro friendship where upon all is forgiven.

I have no idea. The show has some problems (namely underutilizing some characters such as Bismuth) but overall it's still good.

I love the show but the overarching story and deep characters asked you to take the show seriously, but it still wanted get away with being fun and lighthearted — and SU couldn’t pull it off as good as other shows

Havent seen Future so my guess is issues with the writing after maybe Season 3 or 4. I mean, the way they resolve the main story felt a bit anticlimactic. Maybe it was underutilization of characters or just general inconsistencies.

Kinda felt like some people didn’t even watch the show and just went off of what other people said. I knew a few people who didn’t like it because they heard someone else call it “the show where the fat kid bitches and cries about everything”.

There’s a multitude of reasons but there is one in your face reason that I’ve seen absolutely no one talk about and believe me, I’ve tried lol.

It’s an anti action show. It does literally everything it can to avoid physical conflict for more than is necessary. Some don’t know how to deal with that.

To be clear, the show prioritizes reflection over physical prowess. Action doesn’t yield results in this show. Words do and that very idea is basically the antithesis of most media people take in. Especially those teen to young adults that would watch this show

For me is a combo of things that rubs me in the wrong way: the constant flirting with "super strong aliens fights" while being weirdly moralistic against the use of violence.
The other main issue to me is the character arcs that kind of keep repeating: I feel like I can enjoy steven try to repress

His emotion only to burst out creating some dangers in order to learn he has to share even his bad feeling only so many times. but it kinda is still his character arc even in steven universe future.

All together it makes it kind of hard for me to actually care about the characters.

For me, I unfortunately didn't care for the townies that much, and I do feel like both Lapis & Peridot should of gotten more screentime, espicially in future when it comes to Lapis.

I also disagree with the Diamonds been redeemed as I don't think they deserved redemption

My theory on anything thats popular while having good lgbt+ themes and a female creator attracts the worst haters already.
but fan wise the middle of the show does slump a bit and watching in real time was rough while waiting for the plot to return.

I think the main reason that really holds water, that show was always hampered by deciding to only show things when Steven was around to see it, and additional problems piled up because of that. The filler episodes about the townies that don’t matter also didn’t help

Oh also a personal reason I know people will get behind. The secondary crystal gems should have been used way more than they. Also while I think people get way too upset at the stuff with the diamonds, Sugar really shouldn’t have made it seem like pink was the worst one by the end

I recall a lot of people pointing out the lack of on-model consistency. This is largely due to the animators taking directly from the storyboards, and the sb artist's drawing style. This resulted in a lot of size and detail inconsistencies.

Whether this is a bad thing or somebody's personal taste is up for debate. I know that some people find it charming because you can tell which artist worked on the episode. In a way, it helped those artists stand out.
