In the end, patients have to want to change, but many therapists will use motivational interviewing techniques to try to encourage them to do so. It's something we do when working with resistant clients like those court-ordered into treatment.
I know many souls who are stuck in a state of denial, they'll even lie about going to therapy just to put a fake persona on the internet, meanwhile all their IRL friends have left because the toxicity is to much, it's easier to lie on social media and fake those friends then to take accountability
I know someone whose therapist is complicit in advancing their lack of accountability under the guise of “boundaries and self empowerment”. I honestly think the therapist is afraid to confront them like many of their friends are because of their volatility.
Some “therapist” are like that. Many therapist in this day and age are social workers. I stay far from them, they’re not helping their client. It’s only for money.

My anecdotal experience would suggest they are correct.
Otherwise, who should go? People who have their shit together?
