Shocking and infuriating that the FSU would undermine something as important as online protection for hate speech this way. I struggle to understand how protecting people from hateful speech online is something to fear. Taking a couple of seconds to think about your language is obviously too hard.

Shocking? No. This is the FSU after all. Shocked anyone’s shocked at their depravity. Infuriating? Yes. At least for me, more saddening than angering. I’ve literally lost people I know, & loved to censorious regimes. Rights are sacrosanct. Addressing hate doesn’t impinge on them, yet FSU says so. 🤷🏾‍♂️

A similar campaign by the FSU in '23 successfully generated 95% of submissions opposing law reform "to improve the regulation of online services and media platforms to boost consumer safety for all New Zealanders, with a particular focus on minimising content harms for children and young people".

This new FSU campaign risks doing the same for what's a vital, timely consultation based on a very well researched consultation doc. I've deconstructed the FSU's disinformation, & the falsehoods promoted by the pre-written text against the six points in the FSU's template-based submissions.
