Maybe I shouldn't be surprised that the laptop I've used for work 70 hours a week for the last 8 years is significantly slowing down, but if I have to get a new damn laptop, I'm gonna lose my shit 😭

No need. Put SSD (clone old HDD) and double the RAM. If you want to live on the edge and have IT know-how, install Linux and it will fly like the 1st day u bought it
Charlie, does it have an SSD? If so, backup wipe and reimagine. SSDs start to fail if one has sections that are repeatedly read not written. Error correction fixes this but multiple reads are needed to get data and slows things down.
If it does break beyond repair (I really hope it doesn’t) try looking at pawn shops some will haggle the price of their laptops. I had to do that a few years ago when an old one of mine died without warning.
I had the same thought just a few moments ago (the simulation is getting lazy) as I wiped dust from between the keys. I've had the same laptop for years, and I love it so much that I'll cry when it dies. I wonder if tune ups are a thing that I should be going to a professional to do.

And keep that drive in a different place to the laptop.
I have two. One with me and one in a rented mailbox. I exchange those regularly so at least I have nearly everything in a separate place.
