Also-remove facial recognition from your phone! They cannot make you speak your PIN code to them, but they CAN hold your phone to your face to unlock it and access it. They could also place your finger on your phone, if you still have fingerprint locking. Another reason to not bring your phone!

This is a good question!! It does not matter. In the old days, we could just remove the battery to ensure that it's not active, but today's smart phones cannot be turned off completely. Here are some resources:
