I started using kopia to do backups to s3 (wasabi) and it handles compression and encryption for you, but that’s also not gonna be helpful for things like video files that might already be compressed
i've had all my data backed up for a bit and things are stable - even used the same system to back up my desktop for a clean install. still haven't pulled the trigger on destroying my nas for a rebuild... but the data is backed up, so...
I want to move from freenas (yikes) to trusnas core but dropping 3k on drives from the same batch seems like a really bad idea and spacing them out over the course of like 2 years also sounds awful :[
Another complication is that truenas core runs on debian with docker and freenas (old) runs freebsd with iocage containers, so I'd have to remake all of my service VMs in addition to moving all of the data, and some of those have been configured for over a decade
i thankfully moved containers to a coreos server a while ago vs using jails, but i had to move the torrent client to the server with a jail that's using my zpool so i'll have to recreate it. it's only one but i'm dreading doing it all again cause i forgor now. close to a decade too.
My torrent jail is tied to my vpn and I don't remember how I set all of that up, last time I updated the jail I broke it and was leaking. Eventually I won't have a choice but to move over so I should probably do it before they force it via end of updates. Luckily my zpool should move without issues.
I NEED to at least move to truenas core (still freebsd) which as I understand won't break anything since it's basically an os upgrade but uggghhhh what if it borks something
