ACLU = American Civil Liberties Union (a human rights organization)
amicus brief = a statement by an interested who is not one of the actual parties in a suit

There are more pressing issues where the ACLU is needed. Don’t get me wrong, the affair was egregious but it’s still unfolding in the comparatively cosseted world of academic science.

Seemingly. But if suing scientists for making factual critiques became common, there would be broad societal ramifications. Areas of study like climate, reproduction, evolution, and democracy are already politicized. Adding legal attacks to the mix could be a tool to cynically control public policy.
