It's true that diagnoses have been increasing on a per capita basis, but we don't know how many undiagnosed cases there are. Therefore, we have no way of knowing if the frequency of incidence is actually increasing or if modern medicine is getting better at recognizing it.

Do you know HOW FAR we’ve come since 1971 in screening for autism?? Of course the numbers climbed. We have detailed standard testing now that they didn’t back then. So much research has been done in over 50+ years.

It’s because people were being diagnosed more since we know more due to awareness. We have better screening. Saying it’s an epidemic and not factoring in the fact that we have found milder forms of autism and therefore diagnose properly now - is wild.

No, it didn’t happen “very fast.” When I was a teenager in the 70s, I can think of a bunch of kids I was in high school with who were absolutely autistic but there was no such thing, then. Today, I know pretty much the same number of people on the spectrum as I did then. We just know what it is.
