PROHIBITION
Most classic cocktails were invented in the US in late 19th and early 20th century. This golden age of the cocktail was ended by prohibition which lasted from 1920 to 1933. But several classic cocktails were popularised during prohibition such as: Sidecar, White Lady, & Pink Daiquiri.
Some bartenders and barflys left for Europe and carried on creating great drinks. Others took refuge in the underground speakeasies and on cruises that just barely entered international waters where drinking was legal. The emphasis then was less on craft cocktails and more on getting drunk quickly.
One of the main purposes for mixing drinks was to mask the taste of cheap illicit liquor such as bathtub gin.
The mixed drinks served on cruises, such as Three Miller and Twelve Mile Limit (named for the point where they could be served), contained several different liquors and are not recommended.
