The problem is that Russia attacks in unorthodox ways like it did in Ukraine. „Pro Russian separatists“ staging a coup frames it as an internal conflict and prevents any trans-national intervention. Or at least causes a very long delay before help arrives, enough to solidify some considerable gains.
This is a good point. Russia is skilled in hybrid warfare & psy-ops b/c it has little chance of winning a conventional peer-to-peer conflict against a combined NATO army. How badly the US is politically fractured right now shows how effective Ru destabilization ops can be.
