some of this may be nostalgia bias, the tem looks like just a stylized golden lion tamarin to me. I definitely wouldn't call it unnatural compared to a burning chimpanzee child

Youre missing what I'm saying. Look at the shapes. The tem is blocky. It doesn't use natural shapes. And no, it's not nostalgia. I'm a gen one kid. Diamond and Pearl came out when I was 15.

I 100% agree that while some of these other monster taming games may objectively be good games - what stunts their reach are their creature designs.

You can tell an experienced art & character designer is at the helm bc every creature is instantly recognizable as a Pokemon right away.

all tems are blocky. it's their visual identity. they don't look like pokemon because they're trying to be at least somewhat distinct

stuff like this is exactly why games like concord failed. Absolute refusal to admit that something looks bad, constantly citing the bland equalizing force of "subjectivity." If this looks as good as Pokémon to you, you have bad taste. There is a certain level of objectivity to aesthetics
