we continued to visit her twice a day for 3 days after this, but couldn't find her the third time

my hope is she's at a shelter up for adoption now

I hope she's alright. I dislike a lack of closure on things like this as much as the next person, but at times it's all we can do to just hope for the best, and keep an eye out just in case.

My mom and some of her coworkers do the same for a stray near their work place, they've almost adopted it at this point.

we wanted to take her in, but she was too scared to get too close to, so the plan was to have her warm up to us gradually

Baby puppy!!!

If it helps, dogs react a lot to body language. Being tall and straight on is scary, and intimidating. Crouching down, turning youself to the side, and not looking directly at them may help build trust. Consider a local animal rescue too, they know how to not get *rabies*.

Yeah, that's basically the way to go. I watch a group called Hope For Paws on YouTube and they tend to work faster but it's the same approach. Take your time, build trust and THEN if the time is right, try to handle them so you can get them to safety for the care they need.
