How so?
I think there might be a bit of disconnect between Video Media and Game media considering the Video Media (TV/Movies etc) are directed and "set in stone" where Game Media has to deal with player input. Are you more wanting one of those Cinematic Games but RPG'd?

If I remember correctly (since it has been years since I did play it) it's not really that unless you sort of head Canon it in. It has a very Dragon Quest III adventurer hiring system in it iirc.

yeah DQIX local multiplayer was something almost irreplicable. the drop-in drop-out nature of it meant you could band together for big moments and it was just awesome. absolute perfect use of the DS form factor and how cheap and portable it was

For me I wouldn’t mind some RPG’s with a scope that covers smaller stakes. We don’t need to kill God or saving the entire universe. I would happily play a game that covers a smaller area but in return you can see the impact that your actions have in the game world.

I'd imagine that's because it's difficult to make a consistently whimsical story. Even shows filled with whimsy often have the story broken up by serious moments to ground the actions & feelings of the characters.
Especially depending on the scale of conflict. World ending threats aren't whimsical.

I would love to see a Neverwinter Nights 3 in the same vein as BG3. I'd make the same trade we made back when it came out in a heartbeat, giving up a meticulously hand crafted game world for a modularly built one, if it meant we also got the toolkit for people out there to build entire campaigns.

It isn’t fully what you want, but Magicka was a fun multiplayer fun adventure, even if everyone has to be Wizard. And if the Switch port wasn’t subpar, I’d heartily recommend Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles. Still could be fun with friends though.

Hmmm...Final Fantasy Tactics, but each player controls a party member. And everyone can participates in a bar event or a dialogue choices-driven, CYOA-style Mission for Gil, Items, etc.
