I’m just sad this they decided that this is what Marathon should be. My favorite game series of all time. Untouched for two decades. The game is PRETTY. Very unique world and fantastic designs. But not Marathon. And just some new cash grab again.
Mandalore has some great vids about the Marathon trilogy, but fair warning the story can get really confusing even before the third one introduced timeline hopping
The first FPS to let you freely look around in an 3D environment AND the first game that had dual wielding (technically. Another game, by coincidence, came out ON THE SAME DAY that also had dual wielding)
But hey at least you can go download Aleph One and play all of Marathon completely for free on modern PCs AND it’s also on cell phones. Completely legally, kept running by the Marathon fan base after Bungie tossed the entire code and tools to make the game online for free~
I mean that’s the proper way to do it. Even myself, as a huge DOOM fan, am reserving my expectations for Dark Ages.
Am I excited? Sure! Will I likely still play day one? Most likely!
But I’m not gonna judge anything I see till I’ve seen it firsthand.
DOOM 3 has it's place!
It's definitely not boomer shooter DOOM. But it is an excellent horror game and it will always be on my list of recommended horror games.
It also goes in the opposite direction: Don't go in expecting to suck in every way imaginable. Wait until you've experienced the game before criticizing it, and don't just bash on it for the sake of clicks.
Far too many people, especially in the Destiny community, don't seem to understand this.
yeah, very much the same for all the people trashing on the game and acting like it's gonna be the next concord, like that game didn't have its own unique issues that so far are not observable with marathon whatsoever
Honestly, I'm cautiously optimistic with Marathon. Mostly due to the fact that the original series has some wild and wacky storytelling/lore that could elevate this multiplayer game.
My main concern is if they will go the launch Destiny route of having most of the story told outside of the game.
i dont expect the world from pokemon. at this point, i expect the bare minimum and it still disappoints me.
so i dont really know if ill keep buying their games.
unfortunately, everyone else will. and nothing will change, because nothing has to. theyre still making massive profits regardless.
For sure, my days of overhype are behind me. Certainly new Final Fantasy news, or some new projects from familiar developers gives me a kick of excitement, but the days of living and dying in the time between reveal, launch, and play are mercifully past.
I may be completely off but I kind of feel like the reason they are calling it Marathon is for like, trademark reasons. Since the IP has been dormant for decades they risk the chance of losing the “tm” this way they can also refresh any copyright on it. Although this very much may be a stretch lol
- I'm an ex-Destiny 2 vet so I'm likely biased but given that Bungie are smaller now with fewer of their 'old guard' still around, it'd be smart to expect that their worst habits have stuck around
Expect premium cosmetics, modes and story that'll vanish into a vault and fomo like you've never seen
Hit the nail on the head. As much as I want to give Marathon a fair shake and want it to succeed, I'm expecting microtransaction hell, and the art style to be abandoned for pay-shop cosmetics that are cool but go against the aesthetic.
Why? Because the same leadership is overseeing both games.
Every armor set looks like Raid armor these days, which makes the actual raid armor look less impressive, meaning it has to go *batshit insane* like the Root of Nightmares or Salvation's Edge armor sets.
I miss D1's cohesive aesthetic; even the reskins were justified as 'modified' weapons/armor.
D1's aesthetic went so hard, like when there was something that looked less typical it was because there was a reason for it, be it that it came from a particular place like a raid, or later from particular strike bosses.
Player expression was almost better then than Destiny 2.
Ahhh, destiny, the best advertisement for Warframe.
(no diss to the game itself tbh, having played it myself it is VERY fun, but the microtransaction and the over 100gb is rough)
I'm talking now. Played the game a couple years ago, uninstalled once I realized you could buy more upgrade slots or skip the literal days-long wait on crafting by spending platinum. The worst Destiny has is a season pass. Beyond that, it's all reasonable stuff like cosmetics and major expansions.
Also, what do you mean "best advertisement for Warframe"? All they have in common an art style. Gameplay-wise, they have about as much in common as Doom and Minecraft.
Precisely, it's what someone regards as good. You see people spend time on what they acknowledge is mediocre, just to fill time. Unthinking consumption. Don't do that.
Part of this is to work out clear personal criteria of good vs bad and why. Think about preferences. Be critical.
I agree with you, I'm just saying that number 2 can be very wavery. For example, I thought Concord was good, it was THE MOST fun I had ever had in a team based shooter, and I thought it was going to be something i hated, originally, when it was announced. I voted with my wallet on something "Good"
What is a game trying to be? How well does it do it? “The game doesn’t meet the expectations I made up in my head” is valid but not especially useful as critique
Sometimes I wonder why Grown-ups are less joyful then the youth and it mostly boils down to expiriences of disappointment and the expectation of general shittyness. Which is unhealthy in the opposite direction for sure.

Where's that edit button, Bsky?

(Am I still kinda sad about the state of affairs? Sometimes, a tad.)
Like they were riding high off of Halo, that's not to justify the overhype though.
With Marathon though, given the state of Destiny in the modern day caution is highly advised -

Destiny was worth giving Bungie a fair shake
What happened to Destiny 2 however...

No, it's the monetization. Like it's the first big problem of it.
Like most people do that. I did that. And even then it's not a big deal.
Destiny you can't access most of it without buying multiple expansion.
1. Don't psych yourself out of enjoyment.
2. Don't waste time on what isn't good.
Require quality and value for your time and money. But don't get so picky that nothing satisfies you.
