Adding 1+1 is straightforwardly 2, but *multiplying* by one is the source of all kinds of deep magic.

My favorite example of this is 1/sqrt(2) = sqrt(2)/2

1/sqrt(2) is annoying (especially when doing math in one's head without pen+paper), but we can transform it by multiplying by 1.

Mult by 1 doesn't change the value of a term, so it can be used to create convenient equivalences:

1/sqrt(2) = 1/sqrt(2) * 1

1/sqrt(2) = 1/sqrt(2) * sqrt(2)/sqrt(2)

1/sqrt(2) = sqrt(2)/(sqrt(2)*sqrt(2))

1/sqrt(2) = sqrt(2)/2

.. moving that pesky irrational from denominator to numerator!
