A 16 bit 32khz 1MB mono rack sampler the size and weight of a suitcase! Even the ubiquitous S3000xl will probably set you back over £200 and you couldn't give them away around 2010. A sampler that's still useful because it sounds unique, being supported by another sampler that made it laughably obsolete, but is now itself useless because it sounds like nothing. There's some kind of valuable lesson to be learned there...

I was given the S5000 by a friend who wanted to prove it’s a cumbersome workflow but I’ve used s1000 for years and while 5000 is easier, I need my 12 bit downsample for wild tone purist reasons (jungle.) The scsi disc drive it came with lets me use those akai eastwest samples…. In the kurzweil k2000

The FZ filters sound like nothing else. A while back we were looking at working out a mod to run external audio through the filters in realtime, as the filters are actually standalone dedicated chips and not just DSP. I might have to look into that again.

I love mine but largely because that same synthesizer man that tried to punk me with an S5000 sold me the fz’s with a full alphabetized floppy collection of every major analog. He wanted to keep the rack model so I ended up with two FZ1s. Load the same floppy twice and dual modulate. Best strings.

Having one FZ with a working floppy drive is luxury. Having two is just showing off! 😉
I always wanted a FZ20M with SCSI, but could never find one, so i had to make do with a FZ10M, although presumably they used the same main board and SCSI might be addable... hmmm.

I'll give you that, certainly on the earlier Akai's anyway.

That and percussion done on a S3000xl is the sound of all 90s acid techno.
