It's so weird. I was just doing a similar exercise last night while making a fantasy character's boot. I drew what I could remember and then found a similar real-world example to test against what I drew and made corrections. It's super helpful.

Cool! Yeah, it's underrated for sure. Drawing from life is overrated, imo. It doesn't teach you how to draw, and it doesn't help you remember human anatomy. Yet, it is the foundation of most art education.

This is great for learning things like animal anatomy, too. Draw a horse as accurately as you can from imagination, then make photo studies. A couple weeks later, do it again.

That was Kim Jung-Gi’s whole schtick! Try to draw thing from imagination, then study thing and try to memorize info about it, try drawing it from imagination again, repeat until you have it internalized, repeat with more things.

Seems to have worked pretty well for him!

Exactly, yeah. It's the only way to identify what you don't know. But that makes it very uncomfortable. We'd rather keep drawing what we know, over and over. Many artists learn to avoid the stuff they don't know. Sometimes that becomes their "style."
