It comes down to allies thinking "objective truth" like gender is a spectrum but sex is binary and what happens is people suddenly assume being a woman is just a label and that idea ends up still seeing trans women as "male". The way I understand the science, is that we are all conceived as the default female in utero, then some mothers get spike in chemicals, that cause some to transition in utero into men. So men are all trans, regardless 😎 It makes sense that some brains continue as female after in utero transition 🤔

DNA is irrelevant as no one can see it. You don't need to experience dysphoria to be trans, and life is nothing more than a series of events of you proving to members of society who/what you are.

Some just react very poorly to things that don't conform to their ideals of how the world "ought" to be

there are also cis women who experience gender dysphoria & get affirming care for it (hair removal, hrt, etc.)
cis women also, unfortunately, have to "prove" their womanhood all the time

I suspect that trans women are all intersex, but we just don't understand the medical or genetic side yet. We are basically just an extreme example of intersex. Many of us have feminine features or diminished masculine features. A friend of mine is almost unclockable with no surgery or even HRT.

I told a gay friend I thought of it as a birth defect and he really didn't like the analogy. He said birth defects were really rare and it was more like red hair... just a natural part of diversity. Some people will find that birth defect explanation offensive, although I think it's a good one.

A birth defect is an arbitrary social construct anyway. A mutation is just a mutation. No bad no good, it just is. We apply our own sense of value to them. It is an unwanted result of an unwanted SRY gene, in my case.

I think it's kinda just word choice. "defect" implies that it's bad, "mutation" not so much!

I sometimes just describe it as a medical condition which is appropriately treated throughout gender affirming care. It's basically just like an endocrine disorder to me.

Birth defect wasn't a bad thought and I think it actually helped with my wife when she was struggling with my transition. Some people might be offended, though. I'm proud of being trans and no "origin story" can make me feel bad about myself, but some people have a more difficult struggle.

Realizing this for myself ultimately erased decades of internalized transphobia and actually shifted my sexual preferences. I had a mental connection of "penis = abuse" that I unlearned once I could finally understand that penises didn't define gender or personality. Improved my sex life greatly!
