They'll be collecting data that will help us answer vital questions about how nutrients drive the global carbon cycle and ocean ecosystems, and how sensitive these processes are to climate change.

It's currently late summer in Antarctica, and tiny creatures called zooplankton are about to migrate on mass into the deep ocean for the winter. In doing so, they play an important role in transporting carbon to the ocean depths.

They've spent the summer feeding and storing carbon-rich fat in a pouch (called a lipid sac) that fills their entire body and gives them energy over the long, dark winter.

This process (called carbon sequestration) is just one of the things the team on board will be studying while at sea.
